The Dutch National Ballet is very proud to present this Season's new full-length classical production Don Quichotte, in a version specially created for the Company by the leading Russian choreographer Alexei Ratmansky. For the last five years Ratmansky has been artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow, which under his inspired leadership underwent a new artistic flowering and was hailed by critics as 'the best dance company in the world'.

One of Ratmansky's greatest ambitions has been to create a new Don Quichotte, after Cervantes's masterpiece about the foolish wandering knight with – in the ballet – an emphasis on the love between the beautiful Kitri and the destitute Basilio.

In this new production Ratmansky returns to Marius Petipa's first Don Quichotte created for the Bolshoi Ballet in 1869. In conjunction with his successor at the Bolshoi, Yuri Burlaka, Ratmansky – whose ballet Russian Seasons was mounted by the Dutch National Ballet in March 2008 - is to carry out research. It is known that Petipa's first version was more theatrical and folksy, and therefore also closer to Cervantes's novel than the 'more sophisticated' version he created two years later in St Petersburg, on which countless later Don Quichotte ballets are based.

This new version marks the first full-length production of Don Quichotte in the Netherlands. The Frenchman Jιrτme Kaplan - well-known for his sets and costumes for Les Ballets de Monte Carlo and for Raise the Red Lantern for the National Ballet of China - is creating a contemporary stage picture for Ratmansky's production.
