NOW ON DVD AND BLU-RAY: GISELLE Ballet Giselle is spine-tingling
The Dutch National Ballet has released its latest version of Giselle on DVD. One year ago, the company revived this classic to music by Adolphe Adam, after an absence of twelve years.
Giselle takes place in a village where Giselle falls in love with Count Albrecht, who is disguised as a peasant boy. Her admirer Hilarion reveals the count’s identity, which leads to Giselle’s death. After her death, she joins the ranks of the wilis (spirits of brides who have died before their wedding), who – led by their queen Myrtha – first pursue Hilarion to his death and then turn on Albrecht. In the end, it is the love between Giselle and Albrecht that triumphs.
The original choreography from 1841, by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot – one of the oldest surviving works from ballet history – formed the basis for the revival of this ballet by Rachel Beaujean and Ricardo Bustamante.
In this modern Giselle, principal dancers Anna Tsygankova and Jozef Varga star in the title role and the role of Count Albrecht, providing many spine-tingling moments. Principal dancer Igone de Jongh dances the role of the ice-cold Myrtha.
